City Celebration 2022
“If you build it, he will come.”
Field of Dreams (1989)
Great unity will never happen on accident.
“Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever. Amen.” (ESV) Ephesians 3v20-21
IMAGINE the body of Christ annually gathering downtown by the hundreds of thousands to celebrate one another, rejoice together, lift others, and spread great ideas.
IMAGINE our children never knowing what it is like to hear churches criticize and compete with one another.
IMAGINE churches celebrating the success of other churches as their own.
IMAGINE the followers of Jesus celebrating historic shifts in the most challenging areas of disparity in our city because of the overwhelming success of unified efforts in the city.
IMAGINE the followers of Jesus celebrating our local champions in the Church who have done great things. Imagine creating strategic platforms for their ideas and principles to spread throughout the city.
ISN’T IT POSSIBLE for every business to serve like Chik-Fil-A, give like Hobby Lobby, employee second-chance citizens like Uptown and Smartsaver? Isn’t it possible for more families to adopt and answer the call of groups like the 111 Project? and for more individuals to mentor and join programs like Whiz Kids and Reading Buddies? and for more neighbors to move into blighted communities to make a difference together like the Refuge and Christ Community Church?
IMAGINE…what could an annual, modern-day celebration look like that drew Church family (and our neighbors) from across the state to enjoy a myriad of conferences, teachings, indoor and outdoor fun, games, creative ideas, art, music, entertainment, and food of all kinds?
These are the steps toward becoming a “city set on a hill”.
This is the dream and God-sized dreams still come true.
One Million Strong
Our dream is to annually bring together over one million people for a life-changing celebration of unity, great ideas, the weak made strong, and the forgotten remembered.
The Key to Unity
One of the most important keys to unity is CONTEXT. The greatest spaces the Church has for intentional unity are denominations, church networks, one-and-done citywide events, and a handful of non-profit-led efforts to serve the city.
It seems that the answer is one more level up.
The whole body of Christ must have a context where we annually gather together as one to honor God by celebrating one another, lifting the weak, and loving our cities together. This isn’t a new idea. It is actually demonstrated in the Biblical feasts. The children of Israel were commanded to gather with their families before the LORD three times a year. We aren’t suggesting a reenactment of the Biblical feasts, but we are definitely promoting the idea of a multiple day event that is welcoming to the family of God and our neighbors. The feasts were intergenerational, open-air, and indoor gatherings with lots of food, fun, heritage, and time together with others.
The idea of the body of Christ coming together to celebrate God and one another as we bless our cities is actually a strategy for maintaining values for generations. There is something powerful about being together as one family in Christ.
This dream brings momentum to the goal of recovering the 3 SIGNS OF A HEALTHY CITY.
